The Washington Spirit Fall to Gotham FC
NEW YORK — The Washington Spirit faced Gotham FC during the NWSL’s Rivalry week Wednesday night. A highly anticipated match ,with the second largest crowd in NWSL history, sitting at 42,175 attendees, as the teams competed against each other for the first time since the 2025 Championship. However, Wednesday night's game had some roadblocks for both teams as they navigated two hydration breaks per half (mandated due to air quality) and multiple pauses in play due to player injury.
Gotham had no problem maintaining momentum and pressure as they challenged the Spirit’s defense throughout the fixture. Washington, undeterred, was able to find some opportunity in their attacking half. Yet Gotham’s pressure remained consistent leading to a turnover in the Spirit midfield and Gotham goal from #16 Rose Lavelle. Chipping the ball over MacIver for a smooth finish and while Spirit play picked up a little after, Gotham was able to keep them at bay going into halftime.
The second half saw the Spirit working to find that final connection to tie the match. Both teams showed great physicality and competitiveness through the duration of the match as they fought for the win but Gotham was the one to step up to set the tone for the night. The Spirit defensively worked hard to stall Gotham’s offense, four total yellow cards handed out, all four to Washington Spirit Players. Washington stayed steady to put Gotham’s defense under fire, earning multiple last minute opportunities however just falling short. The Spirits last opportunity, a free kick in their attacking half, was denied by Gotham as the referee blew the final whistle.
