The Washington Spirit Defeat Boston Legacy

The Washington Spirit Defeat Boston Legacy

RHODE ISLAND  — Following their 1-0 loss against Gotham on Wednesday, the Spirit looked to Sunday night's match against Boston Legacy to return to form. Immediately starting on the attack, applying heavy pressure to Legacy’s defense. Both teams showed strong defensive effort, working to slow offensive play.

Boston held a high press, staying wary of the Spirit wingers. Washington maintained physicality while making difficult to defend runs, finding holes in the press. Success came in the 25th and 31st minutes as #9 Tara Rudd and #2 Trinity Rodman scored to put the Spirit ahead by two, giving them control of the game heading into halftime.

Boston found dangerous opportunities in the second half, their heavy pressure boosting the attack efforts, causing more than a few close calls for the Spirit. Regardless, Washington’s backline held steady in the face of Legacy’s energy. Unwilling to give up, Boston was able to find a late goal in the 88th minute, # 8 Sammy Smith taking advantage of the Spirits high line to start to close the gap. As the last minutes of the match dwindled, the Spirit successfully fought for their lead. Beating Boston Legacy 2-1.
