An Electric Night for DC United

WASHINGTON  — Saturday night's match was a competitive fixture, but Audi Stadium never fails to generate energy. While the first half saw opportunities for both teams, DC’s momentum kept them forward-facing. Causing chaos in the Toronto box, they were able to score off a set piece in the 41st minute. United defender #15 Kye Rowles put United up before the end of the first half.

Toronto came back in the second half with their own momentum. Increasing pressure on United’s defense. However, United’s goalkeeper #1 Sean Johnson stayed firm, denying multiple Toronto shots. While DC still created their own chances as momentum turned against them, Toronto’s #7 Theo Corbeanu was able to score the equalizer off a set piece in the 76th minute. Springing into action, DC looked for the winning goal as time ran out. Creating smooth combinations, the only thing missing was the final connection into the back of the Toronto net. It was a possible foul in the box that gave United the opportunity to score a last-minute goal. Fans were silent as they awaited the referee’s final decision following a VAR check, erupting into cheers once the Referee confirmed the penalty. It was DC’s own #9 Tai Baribo who decisively put the ball in the back of the net in the 100th minute. As time wound down, Toronto worked to close the deficit again, DC holding on to secure the home win before they clash with Nashville a week from now.
