Wizards–Pelicans preview: ball security faces a final preseason test
Washington closes its preseason in New Orleans at 8 p.m. Eastern Friday. After 23 turnovers against Brooklyn, the next test is handling a Pelicans defense coming off 14 steals and seven blocks in Dallas.

The Wizards visit the Pelicans at Smoothie King Center on Friday, October 16, at 8 p.m. Eastern, with coverage on MNMT/Monumental+. It is Washington’s final preseason game, and the most useful measure may be how many possessions the Wizards finish with a shot rather than a giveaway. Game information.
Recent form: offense has not been the only issue
Washington won its first two exhibitions, 111–109 at New York and 114–108 in overtime against Detroit, before losing 131–122 to Brooklyn on Monday. That leaves the Wizards 2–1 entering the finale. Washington schedule and results.
Against Brooklyn, Kyshawn George scored 21 points and Bilal Coulibaly added 19. The Wizards shot 51 percent from the field, but ESPN’s box score lists 23 Washington turnovers and 57 percent shooting for the Nets. Productive scoring stretches did not compensate for the possessions Washington surrendered or the shots Brooklyn converted. Nets–Wizards box score.
New Orleans is also 2–1 after beating Dallas 101–97 on Wednesday. The Pelicans’ October 15 defensive report highlighted 14 steals and seven blocks in that win. That is the immediate matchup problem Washington must solve. Pelicans results; Pelicans defensive report.
Analysis: make the second pass available
The first watchpoint is Washington’s spacing when the ball meets pressure. A ball handler needs an outlet before a driving lane closes, and the next receiver needs a clear decision: shoot, move the ball or attack the space. A quick first pass accomplishes little if the next player holds the ball and allows the defense to reset. Watch whether Washington can move a possession from one side of the floor to the other without forcing a long pass through traffic.
This is also a test of judgment after an advantage appears. A clean kickout can be more valuable than one more dribble into a crowd. The Wizards do not need a conservative offense; they need to distinguish a pass that creates a chance from a pass that merely hopes a chance is there. Compare the quality of the shots after consecutive passes with the possessions that end in congestion.
Analysis: defense must finish the possession
The second watchpoint is the connection between ball security and defensive balance. A missed shot with players in position gives Washington a chance to organize. A giveaway while teammates are moving toward the basket can leave the first defender solving a numbers problem. Early communication, protecting the middle and getting matched up matter as much as the next highlight recovery.
In settled possessions, judge the entire sequence: containment on the first drive, the help rotation and the rebound. Forcing a difficult attempt is only part of a stop. Washington’s improvement would be visible if the first good defensive action leads to possession, rather than another scramble.
Analysis: make New Orleans handle pressure, too
The Pelicans committed 21 turnovers in Dallas. Washington can test that ball security without turning the game into an exchange of gambles: show active hands, close passing windows and keep a defender between the ball and the rim. The choice between a controlled contest and a reach that opens a driving lane is another useful preseason evaluation. Pelicans–Mavericks box score.
Availability and prediction
Final starting lineups and Friday’s game-day availability were not confirmed in the sources checked for this preview. Earlier rest or injury listings should not be treated as confirmation of who will dress tonight.
Prediction: a narrow lean toward New Orleans. Its latest defensive performance makes Washington’s possession management the deciding test in this analysis. If the Wizards reduce the giveaways and finish their defensive possessions, they can reverse that lean. This is a preseason assessment, not a projection of either team’s rotation or minutes.
