Georgetown rallies late to beat William & Mary 28-27

William & Mary led 27-21 in the fourth quarter on Saturday at Walter J. Zable Stadium, but Georgetown scored on a 10-yard pass with 38 seconds left and won 28-27 in front of 12,369 fans.

The Tribe fell to 3-5 overall, 1-3 at home and 1-4 in conference play. The Hoyas improved to 3-4.

How it unfolded

Andrew King put William & Mary ahead on the game's first play from scrimmage, a 68-yard touchdown run 17 seconds into the drive. Georgetown answered with Gavin Beard touchdown passes of 30 yards to Samir Crosby and 41 yards to Jonathan Alexander, the second with 44 seconds left in the first quarter, for a 14-7 lead.

Jah'Kei Chavis tied it at 14 with a 4-yard run late in the second quarter. Beard hit Isaiah Grimes from 8 yards early in the third, and Khylil Johnson answered with a 52-yard touchdown catch from Winston Watkins to make it 21-21.

Max Lipinski kicked field goals of 32 and 22 yards in the fourth quarter to put the Tribe up 27-21. The second came on a 13-play, 48-yard drive that took 6:55 and ended with Lipinski's 22-yarder with 5:05 left, after a holding penalty had wiped out a Chavis touchdown run.

The finish

Georgetown then drove to the W&M 20, but the Tribe forced a turnover on downs with 1:52 left. William & Mary went three-and-out and punted from its own 17, and the kick went 33 yards to the W&M 50. Beard moved the Hoyas down the field, helped by a 13-yard pass interference penalty on the Tribe, and found Hassan Mahasin for the 10-yard touchdown on fourth down. On the Tribe's next snap, Watkins was intercepted by Damon Narcisse, and Georgetown kneeled out the clock.

Turnovers and the numbers

Watkins finished 11 of 24 for 149 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The Tribe's three turnovers compared with two for Georgetown, which lost a Beard fumble and threw one interception. Bryce Barnes had the Tribe's interception.

William & Mary outrushed the Hoyas 203 yards to 151. King ran 11 times for 96 yards, and Chavis had 19 carries for 66 yards and a score. Johnson caught three passes for 70 yards and returned four kickoffs for 109 yards. Lipinski went 2 for 2 on field goals and 3 for 3 on extra points. Christopher Higgins led the Tribe with 10 tackles, and Stephon Hicks had a sack.

Beard went 21 of 36 for 265 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. Alexander caught four passes for 124 yards, and Mahasin had six catches. Georgetown had 416 total yards to the Tribe's 352 and 26 first downs to 19. Each team was penalized about 10 times: Georgetown 10 for 89 yards, W&M 9 for 96.
