Virginia women's basketball beats Davidson 72-57 on the road

The Virginia Cavaliers women's basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 72-57 win over Davidson on Thursday night at John M. Belk Arena in Davidson, N.C.

Kymora Johnson led the way with 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, and added a team-high five assists. Mary-Anna Asare scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and Breona Hurd had 13 points and a game-high-for-Virginia eight rebounds along with three steals. Caterina Piatti added 12 points.

A slow start, then a push

The teams were tied at 14 after the first quarter. Virginia outscored Davidson 23-19 in the second to take a 37-33 halftime lead, then pulled away with a 22-11 third quarter. The Cavaliers' largest lead was 19 points, and they led for 78 percent of the game. Virginia closed the fourth quarter with a 13-13 split.

Where it was won

Virginia shot 27-of-55 from the field (49 percent) and 6-of-14 from three, and went 12-of-13 at the free-throw line. Davidson shot 18-of-54 (33 percent) and 4-of-20 from beyond the arc.

The Cavaliers scored 36 points in the paint to Davidson's 24 and had an 11-2 edge in fast-break points. Virginia also scored 15 points off turnovers to Davidson's 11, and recorded eight steals and four blocks. Davidson had the advantage on the offensive glass, 10-6, and at the line, where it took 22 free throws and made 17 to Virginia's 13 attempts.

Davidson

Kyra Bruyndoncx led the Wildcats with 14 points. Lilli Onnela scored 9 and grabbed a team-high five rebounds, and Katie Donovan had a team-best three assists to go with 8 points. Davidson fell to 0-2, including 0-1 at home. A crowd of 1,086 attended.
