Franklin seeks a response as Georgia Tech visits Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech returns to Lane Stadium with two losses decided by a combined seven points and a need to turn late-game opportunities into finishes. James Franklin’s Monday response to the 25–20 defeat at California emphasized accountability and corrections as the Hokies prepare for Georgia Tech.

Tech is 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the ACC. A 35–33 home loss to Pitt on Oct. 2 ended its unbeaten start; Saturday’s setback at Cal followed another late reversal. Ethan Grunkemeyer’s rushing touchdown put Tech ahead 20–19, but Ashten Emory scored for Cal with 18 seconds remaining. The Hokies reached the Bears’ seven-yard line on their final chance before a pass intended for Luke Reynolds was broken up.

Franklin said the players and staff needed to own what went wrong and learn from it. He also emphasized the physical test posed by Georgia Tech’s lines. Tight end Benji Gosnell said the running game could improve by building on its existing identity and finding ways to get Marcellous Hawkins Jr. and Jeffery Overton Jr. involved. Defensive lineman Elhadj Fall identified the athleticism and technique of the Yellow Jackets’ offensive line.

Saturday’s opponent arrives after a 28–25 win over Duke, its first ACC victory of the season. Trelain Maddox rushed for 81 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Alberto Mendoza threw for 218 yards and a score. That makes Tech’s front against Georgia Tech’s line and rushing attack a concrete matchup to follow, after the Yellow Jackets finished their own tight game.

Third down supplies another measurable test. Georgia Tech has converted 36.2% of its attempts; Virginia Tech has allowed opponents to convert 31.2%, according to the Hokies’ Monday preview. The Yellow Jackets went 4-for-10 against Duke. Tech’s defense must translate that season advantage into possessions it can end, particularly when the game is close.

Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. Eastern Saturday, Oct. 17, on ACC Network. The Homecoming game is Tech’s fourth consecutive sold-out home date. The familiar setting follows a West Coast trip, but the decisive work remains finishing drives and protecting a late lead.
