Virginia’s home opener became a showcase for its attacking depth, with six players scoring in a 7-0 victory over James Madison on Sept. 13 at Turf Field.

Caitlin Connell finished with two goals and an assist as the 11th-ranked Cavaliers improved to 4-1. Virginia scored in every quarter and added three goals in the final period, leaving James Madison at 0-4.

The official box score credits Lauren Sloan with the opening goal at 11:33, assisted by Emma Watchilla. Connell made it 2-0 in the second quarter, and Mia Abello converted a penalty stroke before halftime. The Cavaliers had turned a one-goal first quarter into a three-goal cushion at the break.

Livvy Barker extended the lead early in the third after Connell supplied the assist. Catalina Quinteros, Connell and Mary Adams then scored in the fourth, completing a game in which Virginia never allowed a shot on goal.

Virginia’s account of the game describes a James Madison goal being waved off in the second quarter before the Cavaliers pulled away. It also highlights Connell’s connection with Barker after halftime and the late scoring burst that prevented the attack from slowing with a comfortable lead.

Nilou Lempers played the first 45 minutes in goal, with Emma Giesting handling the final quarter. Neither needed a save. At the other end, Virginia generated 21 shots and nine penalty corners, while the Dukes managed one shot and two corners.

Connell’s five shots and Sloan’s seven kept James Madison under pressure. The shutout completed a two-win weekend for Virginia after its 2-1 victory at Liberty.
