Virginia cannot answer Duke’s early corner in ACC opener — September 18, 2026

One first-quarter penalty corner decided Virginia’s ACC opener. Julia Boehringer scored at 13:30, and No. 8 Duke held on for a 1-0 win over the ninth-ranked Cavaliers on Sept. 18 in Durham.
Callie Rogers and Maggie Kondrath assisted on the goal, which arrived with 90 seconds left in the opening period. Virginia did not find a response and fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Duke’s early pressure proved enough. After the opening goal, Virginia limited the Blue Devils’ opportunities, but its own chances remained scarce. Caitlin Connell tested goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow late in the fourth quarter without producing an equalizer, according to Virginia’s official recap.
The official box score shows just three Virginia shots for the match: one in the first quarter, none in the second and one in each period after halftime. Connell and Lauren Sloan supplied the two attempts on goal. Chepow saved both to complete the shutout.
Nilou Lempers made two saves for Virginia, and Sloan added a defensive save. Duke finished with seven shots, four on target, including the one that settled the game. Boehringer scored on her only attempt.
Virginia’s defensive work kept the margin at one for more than three quarters, preserving the possibility of a late turnaround. But the Cavaliers could not turn that narrow deficit into a sustained offensive response.
The result left Virginia chasing its first ACC win with another conference road game still ahead that weekend. Duke improved to 5-2 overall and opened its own league schedule with a victory.
