Nilou Lempers made a career-high 15 saves, but California ended Virginia’s resistance 50 seconds into overtime in a 2-1 victory on Oct. 4 at Turf Field.

Liz Klompmaker scored the winner from a penalty corner, assisted by Holly Pears and Agustina Daud. No. 11 Virginia fell to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC.

Mia Abello had given the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead at 5:14, with Rylee Dennis assisting. Virginia carried that advantage into halftime, although Cal goalkeeper Carine Van Weichen stopped an Abello penalty stroke late in the second quarter.

Josefina Moyano equalized at 41:37 on an assist from Adya Kadam. After Virginia defended late corners to reach overtime, the 20th-ranked Bears converted their next opportunity.

Virginia’s official recap records Cal’s 25-6 shot advantage and 17-2 edge in penalty corners. Lempers’ 15 saves were the most by a Virginia goalkeeper since 2009. Van Weichen finished with two saves.

The official game record confirms the overtime defeat, which left Virginia with a split of its weekend home games against Stanford and Cal.
