Stony Brook’s return touchdown and seven sacks stop Towson’s comeback

Towson erased most of a 17-point deficit Saturday, but a kickoff return interrupted its recovery and a long fourth-quarter drive restored Stony Brook’s breathing room. The Tigers lost 31–24 despite a 433–320 advantage in total yards.

Jacob Davis threw for 337 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 66. His 18-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Pugh brought Towson within 17–14 with 7:53 left in the third quarter. Eleven seconds later, DaMario Crawford’s 90-yard kickoff return put the Seawolves ahead by ten again.

The Tigers answered that setback with a six-play, 75-yard drive. Pugh’s two-yard touchdown run reduced the deficit to 24–21, giving Towson another chance to finish a comeback that had begun before halftime.

Stony Brook instead used 15 plays to cover 71 yards over 6:57. Quinn Boyd’s 13-yard touchdown run with 9:15 remaining moved the lead to 31–21. Towson reached the Seawolves’ 38 on its next possession, but Ryan Barrett intercepted Davis to end that response.

The pressure remained a problem on Towson’s following drive. A sack and a completion that lost five yards left the Tigers punting on fourth-and-19. They eventually drove 73 yards for Zaydaan Faridi’s 43-yard field goal, but it came with only 11 seconds remaining.

Boyd had created the early deficit with touchdown passes of 15 yards to James Dely and 26 yards to Seth Sweitzer. Michael Mannino’s 40-yard field goal made it 17–0 before Davis found Aaron Enterline for a 19-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.

Davis completed 26 of 34 passes with one interception. Cleveland Charlton caught four passes for 142 yards, and Enterline added seven receptions for 68. Towson’s passing production kept the comeback alive, but Stony Brook sacked Davis seven times for 35 yards.

Khalid Bueno recorded three sacks, with Lance Byndon and Sebastian Regis contributing two apiece. Boyd finished with 175 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus 57 rushing yards and the fourth-quarter score.

Towson fell to 0–7. Its three touchdown drives reduced the early gap, but Crawford’s return, the seven sacks and Boyd’s final scoring possession kept the Tigers from taking the lead.
