ODU's Marshall finale puts serve pressure and late-set execution under the spotlight

Old Dominion must carry its best stretches through the finish when it hosts Marshall again Saturday. The Monarchs rallied into a second-set lead Friday but could not hold it, and the Thundering Herd completed a sweep to take the Sun Belt series opener.
The Monarchs host the Thundering Herd at 2 p.m. Eastern on Oct. 24 at the ODU Volleyball Center. ESPN+ will stream the match, which is part of ODU's Dig Pink and Alumni Weekend. Official weekend preview
Marshall won Friday 25-17, 25-23, 25-14. ODU is 4-16 overall and 0-9 in the Sun Belt; Marshall is 6-3 in conference play. ODU’s Friday report | Marshall’s Friday report
Katie Rakoski led ODU with 13 kills and a .357 hitting percentage Friday. Kyra Hampton recorded 26 assists and 15 digs, while Taylor Motes supplied five blocks. Those contributions provide a route into the rematch: sustain an efficient attacking option, keep defensive touches playable and make Marshall earn points across longer rallies. Keep the promising stretches from slipping away
Friday’s second set supplied the clearest opportunity. ODU erased a substantial deficit, moved level at 22-22 and then took a 23-22 lead through Rakoski. Marshall won the next three rallies. For Saturday, reaching a useful position is only the first step; the Monarchs need controlled first contacts and repeatable attacking choices when the next point can change the set.
The opener also showed the cost of allowing runs before that stage. ODU fell behind early in the first and third sets. Rather than relying on a late recovery, the Monarchs need to keep the score manageable while their offense settles. Friday’s match sequence
Disrupt the attack before the final swing
Marshall's Oct. 18 response at Coastal Carolina was emphatic: 50 kills, five errors and a .474 hitting percentage in a three-set win. Maddie Smith finished with 14 kills without an error, and Emma Barnett added 12. Those numbers make pressure on Marshall's first contact an important part of ODU's defensive task. Allowing the Herd to settle into clean offensive possessions would put substantial strain on the Monarchs' block. Marshall's Coastal Carolina recap
Leilani Lawrence offers one potential way to create that disruption. She entered the weekend with 32 aces, alongside a team-leading 238 kills. The balance for ODU is to serve aggressively enough to move Marshall's attack off its preferred spots while keeping the ball in play and making the Herd work through rallies. ODU's pre-series numbers
