Missed set points and Coastal’s block leave ODU with four-set loss

Approved Old Dominion artwork

Old Dominion came within one point of winning Saturday’s second set, then had to spend the third keeping its volleyball match alive. Coastal Carolina’s defense ultimately closed the match in four sets.

ODU lost 14–25, 24–26, 27–25, 13–25 to fall to 4–13 overall and 0–6 in the Sun Belt. The turning point came in the second, when the Monarchs led 24–20. Coastal saved four set points and scored six straight, turning a possible level match into a two-set lead.

The Monarchs responded by winning a prolonged third set, but could not carry that recovery into the fourth. Coastal finished with a 12-point margin, preventing a deciding set.

Leilani Lawrence led ODU with 13 kills, Katie Rakoski added 12 and Wiktoria Zagumny supplied 31 assists. Those contributions came against substantial resistance at the net: Coastal recorded 20 blocks, with Hatteras Welker involved in 12.

ODU finished with 43 attack errors and a −.025 hitting percentage, while Coastal hit .255. The contrast explains the difficulty of building on the third-set win. The Monarchs could find productive attacks, but too many other attempts ended negatively for them to sustain the recovery.
