Gutierrez’s 232 rushing yards power Navy’s comeback over Tulsa

Jackson Gutierrez supplied the rushing production, and Navy supplied the finishing run of points. The Midshipmen scored the final 20 points Saturday to beat Tulsa 34–26.

Gutierrez carried 41 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns, and added 95 passing yards with another touchdown. His four-yard rushing score with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter put Navy ahead during the closing run.

Navy rushed for 386 yards, with Michael Barrow contributing 107. That running production came alongside a less comfortable number: four turnovers. The Midshipmen never punted, but those giveaways meant that moving the ball did not always become a completed scoring opportunity.

The scoring sequence showed how much ground Navy had to recover. Gutierrez opened the afternoon with a 56-yard touchdown run, but Tulsa scored the next 20 points. Navy narrowed that gap just before halftime when Gutierrez found Truman Brasfield for a 58-yard touchdown with 17 seconds remaining. The Midshipmen still trailed 20–14 at the break.

Tulsa extended the lead to 26–14 early in the third quarter. Charles Robinson’s seven-yard touchdown run then began Navy’s closing 20-point response, bringing the Midshipmen within six before the final quarter.

Gutierrez’s go-ahead score finished a 14-play, 62-yard possession that consumed 6:43. Navy then used another long drive, 13 plays and 82 yards over 6:16, to produce his three-yard touchdown with 1:10 left. Those two possessions did more than add 14 points: they made Tulsa spend most of the fourth quarter waiting for another offensive opportunity.

Navy’s next scheduled game is against UTSA on October 17.

Navy improved to 2–3.
