Vasilios scores twice as No. 1 Maryland field hockey blanks Michigan State, 4–0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Madeline Vasilios scored twice for her first career multi-goal game, and No. 1 Maryland field hockey beat Michigan State 4–0 Friday to remain unbeaten at 13–0.
The Terrapins improved to 4–0 in the Big Ten by turning a scoreless first quarter into a comfortable afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Babs van Hest and Vasilios scored in the second quarter, Aida Ierubino added a third-quarter goal, and Vasilios finished the scoring in the fourth.
Maryland outshot Michigan State 27–3, put 13 shots on target to the Spartans’ two, and held an 11–2 advantage in penalty corners. The result was the Terps’ seventh shutout of the season and their eighth win in eight home games.
Two goals break the first-half stalemate
Maryland had six shots to Michigan State’s one in the opening quarter but entered the second still looking for its first goal. Spartans goalkeeper Lola Munoz de Verger made two first-quarter saves and denied van Hest and Jordyn Hollamon early in the second.
Van Hest broke through at 20:41 with an unassisted goal, her seventh of the season. Vasilios doubled the lead at 24:05, finishing a chance assisted by Kendall Gilmore. Those goals, 3 minutes and 24 seconds apart, gave Maryland a 2–0 halftime lead.
The Terps kept Michigan State without a shot in the third quarter while taking seven themselves. Ierubino scored unassisted at 37:23 for her fourth goal of the season, extending the advantage to 3–0 before the final period.
Vasilios added her second goal at 51:51. She finished with two goals on two shots on target and increased her season total to four.
A shared shutout keeps Maryland perfect
Alyssa Klebasko played the first 45 minutes and made one save. Ryleigh Osborne handled the final 15 minutes and also made one save to complete the combined shutout. Munoz de Verger played all 60 minutes for Michigan State and finished with nine saves.
The Spartans fell to 5–9 overall and 0–6 in conference play. Maryland improved to 19–0 in the all-time series and reached 13–0 for the fifth time in program history, its first such start since 2018.
Friday was Maryland’s first game since moving to No. 1 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Terps’ next Big Ten test comes at home Sunday, October 18, when they host Ohio State at noon Eastern. The game is scheduled to stream on B1G+.
