Liberty women's basketball routs Frostburg State 73-30 in season opener

The Liberty Flames opened their season with a 73-30 win over the Frostburg State Bobcats on Monday night at Liberty Arena in Lynchburg, Va. Liberty is 1-0 at home.

Liberty led by as many as 43 points and never trailed. The Flames outscored the Bobcats 23-0 in the fourth quarter, after quarter scores of 17-6, 18-15 and 15-9 in the first three.

Gregory and Stout lead the scoring

Sophia Gregory and Emmy Stout each scored 14 points to pace Liberty. Gregory shot 6 of 7 from the field and added nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Stout went 6 of 12 and made 2 of 3 free throws.

Ify Nwaobi had 12 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and five blocks. JaKayla Thompson scored nine points and made all five of her free throws. Layla Scott and Emma Leon each had five points.

Defense creates the gap

Liberty forced 26 Frostburg State turnovers and finished with 15 steals and seven blocks. Elisabeth Aegisdottir had four steals. The Flames turned those takeaways into 34 points and scored 14 fast-break points.

The Flames also controlled the paint, outscoring the Bobcats 48-14 inside. Liberty out-rebounded Frostburg State 54-30, with 22 offensive boards. Lynn Peters grabbed five of them in 22 minutes.

Liberty shot 29 of 68 (43%) from the floor and 11 of 15 (73%) at the line. The Flames made 4 of 24 from three-point range, the same mark as the Bobcats.

Frostburg State shot 12 of 53 (23%) and had seven assists to its 26 turnovers. Julie Spinelli led the Bobcats with nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Ayla Hileman scored eight and Jenna Muha six. Sophie Nichols missed all nine of her shots.
