Liberty responded to an early Appalachian State goal with four straight scores and went on to a 7–2 victory on Sept. 20 at Liberty Field Hockey Field. Josefina Tomasi scored twice, leading six Lady Flames on the scoresheet one day after an overtime loss to Miami (Ohio).

The No. 13 Lady Flames and the Mountaineers both finished the day at 5–3. Liberty’s response was immediate enough to turn a first-quarter deficit into a halftime advantage, then sustained enough to prevent a second-half comeback. Liberty’s official recap details the turnaround.

Darby Reyburn opened the scoring for App State at 3:53. Paris-Gail Isaacs equalized from a penalty corner, Luna Prieri put Liberty ahead and Tomasi added the next goal. Clarisa Iudicello extended the margin to 4–1 before Sarah Callery scored for the Mountaineers near halftime.

Julieta Tornati, Tomasi and Pia Iapichino supplied Liberty’s second-half goals. The official box score shows that App State did not attempt a shot after the break. Both of the Mountaineers’ shots in the game became goals, while Liberty generated 27 attempts and put 17 on target.

The Lady Flames also earned eight penalty corners to App State’s one. Their busiest attacking period was the third quarter, when they recorded 11 shots and four corners while increasing the lead from 4–2 to 6–2.

That second-half control gave the result a different shape from the previous afternoon’s defeat. Liberty had surrendered a late lead against Miami; against App State, it allowed no further shooting opportunities after halftime. The Lady Flames closed the home weekend with a win and turned next toward their BIG EAST opener at Connecticut.
