JMU's Georgia Southern rematch tests its block and ability to close sets

James Madison needs a more efficient attack to split its weekend at Georgia Southern. The Dukes return to Hanner Fieldhouse on Saturday after the Eagles swept Friday’s Sun Belt series opener, putting the focus on converting competitive stretches into finished sets.
The teams meet at 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Georgia, with coverage on ESPN+. It is the second match of their Sun Belt series. JMU schedule
Georgia Southern won Friday 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 and enters the rematch 14-7 overall and 6-3 in the Sun Belt. JMU is 10-9 and 5-4. The result ended the Eagles’ two-match losing streak and extended the Dukes’ search for a response after their previous weekend against App State. JMU’s Friday report
Kennedy Louisell led JMU with 13 kills Friday, while Ayen Nhial and Melisa Ilter each recorded four blocks. The Dukes hit .140 against Georgia Southern’s .227. That gap makes the next step clear: a block or a playable defensive touch must lead to a useful attacking chance, rather than another difficult swing that allows the Eagles to reset. Friday’s attacking and blocking comparison
Blocking must become a sustained advantage
JMU outblocked App State 8-6 in the Oct. 16 match, but the Mountaineers still hit .333 to the Dukes' .193 and won in three sets. Peri Linterman contributed a career-high five blocks, and defensive specialist Shelby Davis posted a career-best 10 digs. Kennedy Louisell led JMU with 14 kills. Those performances provide individual positives, but the efficiency gap shows how much work remained after the initial defensive touch. JMU match report
Georgia Southern presents a demanding test of that connection between blocking and floor defense. The Eagles entered the weekend leading the Sun Belt with a .256 hitting percentage and averaging 13.71 kills per set. The question for JMU is whether its net defense can take away clean swings often enough to create playable balls and counterattacks, rather than isolated points. Closing opportunities matter to both teams
Neither side needs to look far for a lesson in protecting a lead. JMU led 9-3 in the second set of its Oct. 16 loss before App State worked back into the match. Georgia Southern led Arkansas State 21-15 in the third set the next afternoon and later had three set points at 24-21, but lost the set 26-24. JMU recap | Georgia Southern recap
Reagan Barth led the Eagles with 11 kills in that Arkansas State match, while Beka Pfefferkorn added nine and 12 digs. JMU will need to account for both instead of allowing one productive rotation to turn into a long scoring run. Georgia Southern match statistics
