Howard men's basketball beats Alcorn State 94-83 on the road

Howard men's basketball beat Alcorn State 94-83 on Thursday night, Nov. 5, 2026, at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Miss., improving to 1-1 on the season.

Cedric Taylor III led the Bison with 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting, going 9-of-13 at the free throw line. He also had 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in 33 minutes.

Howard built its lead early

Howard scored 47 points in each half. Alcorn State put up 32 in the first half and 51 in the second, so the Bison led 47-32 at the break and held on through a Braves rally after halftime.

The Bison's largest lead was 18 points. Howard led for 81 percent of the game, while Alcorn State's biggest lead was 5.

Inside scoring and efficiency

Howard shot 32-of-56 from the field (57 percent) and scored 44 points in the paint to Alcorn State's 30. The Bison went 6-of-18 from three and 24-of-36 at the line.

Cam Gillus added 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting in 36 minutes. James Brown scored 12, Gasper Kocevar had 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Josiah Lawson came off the bench for 10. Drew Harris and BJ Powell each scored 5.

Howard committed 10 turnovers and scored 17 points off Alcorn State's 11 giveaways, while the Braves had 7 points off Howard's miscues. Each team had 9 fast break points.

Alcorn State's response

Trey Thomas scored 27 points for the Braves, matching Taylor, on 10-of-27 shooting with 4 three-pointers. Saxby Sunderland scored 13 off the bench and Jahseem Felton had 12. Calvin Sirmans III handed out 9 assists, and Adam Tokpah led Alcorn State with 6 rebounds.

The Braves, now 0-2, had 14 offensive rebounds to Howard's 11 but trailed on the boards overall, 34-26. Alcorn State shot 30-of-65 (46 percent) and 9-of-28 from three.

The game drew an announced crowd of 500.
