Howard beats Morgan State 26-20 in OT on Chandler's 87-yard pick-six

Ben Chandler IV intercepted Cameron Edge on fourth-and-19 in overtime and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown, giving Howard a 26-20 win over Morgan State on Saturday at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore.

The Bison (4-4, 1-0 in conference) had been down 20-6 early in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 246 total yards to the Bears' 294.

The overtime finish

Morgan State had the ball first in overtime. Keith Jenkins Jr. ran for 6 yards to the Howard 19 on first down. Edge was then sacked for a 9-yard loss by Gabe Stephens and Faisal Mass, and his third-down completion to Jenkins lost 6 yards. On fourth-and-19, Edge was hurried by Ishaun Abdul-Ali and threw the pass that Chandler picked off at the Howard 13 and took 87 yards to the end zone.

The interception was the only turnover of the game. Howard did not turn the ball over.

Fourth-quarter comeback

Morgan State led 13-6 after a 36-yard Edge touchdown pass to Joseph Towler in the third quarter. Edge hit Alex Simmons for a 14-yard score to open the fourth and make it 20-6.

Howard answered with two touchdown drives. Isaiah Freeman scored on a 2-yard run with 7:46 left, capping a seven-play, 43-yard drive. After a Morgan State punt, Freeman threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Billy Roberson II to tie it at 20-20. Roberson ran for 20 yards and 12 yards on that drive, and Nathanial Clark caught a 20-yard pass.

Howard's final drive of regulation went 38 yards in six plays, with Freeman running for 13 and 6 yards, but time ran out and the game went to overtime.

Early going

Morgan State took a 6-0 lead on field goals of 42 and 29 yards by Alex Amaya. Matt Conord answered with field goals of 38 and 27 yards for Howard, tying it 6-6 at halftime. Conord went 2-for-2 on field goals.

Leaders

Roberson led Howard with 76 rushing yards on 14 carries and caught three passes, one for a touchdown. Freeman ran for 42 yards and a score and threw for 36 yards and a touchdown on 4-of-6 passing. Ja'Shawn Scroggins and Terrell Russell Jr. also played quarterback, combining for 44 passing yards. Howard passed for 80 yards and ran for 166.

Mass finished with 1.5 sacks, Stephens had 0.5 and Jason Seraphin had 1. Kaleb Gallop, Kedrick Green and Aidan Foster each had six tackles. John Washington III returned five kickoffs for 154 yards, with a long of 61.

Edge completed 23 of 33 passes for 195 yards, two touchdowns and the interception for Morgan State (5-3). Jenkins ran for 82 yards on 17 carries. Darius Jones had 11 tackles. Morgan State was flagged 14 times for 110 yards, compared with seven penalties for 47 yards for Howard.

Stephens was injured on the sack in overtime.
