Hampton returns to Armstrong Stadium for homecoming against surging Monmouth

The Pirates’ first on-campus game of the season brings a ranked CAA leader and a quarterback decision to watch.

Hampton’s 98th homecoming will also mark its return to Armstrong Stadium. After playing its first three home games at Darling Stadium during turf and track replacement work, the Pirates host nationally ranked Monmouth on campus Saturday.

The October 24 kickoff is 2:02 p.m. Eastern in Hampton, Virginia. The game will stream on FloCollege and air on Monumental Sports Network. Hampton’s official game information specifies 2:02, rather than the rounded 2 p.m. listing used in some schedules. Hampton’s game-day announcement

Quarterback usage remains central

Hampton said Thursday that Jalen Woods had not been cleared to return from the injury he suffered September 12 against Bryant. Tre’Von Taylor has started the last four games, while freshman Xavier Brookins has appeared off the bench in the last three. Hampton’s quarterback update

Both contributed in last Saturday’s 35-21 loss at Sacred Heart. Taylor completed seven of nine passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns; Brookins threw for 98 yards and scored on a 38-yard run. Hampton also came away empty after reaching the goal line and lost a fumbled punt that gave Sacred Heart a short field. Official Sacred Heart recap and scoring summary

The Pirates, 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the CAA, need to turn that quarterback production into cleaner possessions. Watching how Taylor and Brookins are used is only part of the story; finishing drives and avoiding special-teams mistakes are equally important against an opponent comfortable playing from ahead.

Monmouth can control the game on the ground

The Hawks arrive 5-2 and 4-0 in conference play after four consecutive wins. They are No. 18 in the AFCA coaches poll and No. 19 in the Stats Perform poll. In a 42-21 win at New Hampshire, Monmouth led 28-0 at halftime and rushed for 326 yards.

Kenny Smith Jr. and Elijah Jennings combined for 301 of those yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Frankie Weaver added 195 passing yards and two scores without an interception. Monmouth’s official preview

Hampton’s defensive task is to keep those early rushing gains manageable and create chances to end possessions. Monmouth has converted 52 of 101 third downs this season and allowed only two sacks through seven games. Falling behind would make it harder for Hampton to dictate how either offense plays. Monmouth’s season notes

The return to Armstrong gives the occasion extra weight. For Hampton to turn that occasion into an upset opportunity, the homecoming energy has to be accompanied by red-zone execution and enough defensive stops to keep Monmouth from building another early cushion.
