George Washington turned a scoreless first half into a Senior Day victory Thursday, with first-year forward Sophia Michel scoring twice after the break in a 2–0 win over George Mason.

Michel opened the scoring in the 57th minute with a shot from the top of the penalty area that carried over the goalkeeper. Kolby Moss supplied the assist. Michel added the second goal in the 80th minute after Ell Provost-Heron advanced the ball and delivered a pass into the box.

The two scoring combinations made the difference in a local matchup that remained relatively close in its overall shooting totals. GW finished ahead 15–13 in shots and 5–4 in shots on goal. Michel put both of her shots on target into the net; the Patriots’ four attempts on goal were all stopped by Jasmine Black.

Black played the entire match and made four saves for her fifth shutout of the season. Keeping Mason off the scoreboard allowed GW to wait for the opening goal without first needing to chase a deficit, then protect its advantage until Michel supplied the second.

The home program honored Rose Vigran, Charlotte Li, Sophia Broz, Kate McGrath, Ariana Gronauer, Alexa Meinen and Kate Silverstein before kickoff. The match supplied a winning finish to that ceremony, with first-year players producing the decisive scoring plays.

GW’s official report lists Michel with seven goals, tied for the Atlantic 10 lead at the time of the recap. Moss recorded her second assist of the season, while Provost-Heron reached nine points. George Mason received two yellow cards during the match.

The final score was wider than the difference in shots. GW’s decisive advantage was turning its two Michel opportunities into goals while Black kept all four Mason shots on target out. Michel’s finishing and Black’s saves decided a match with relatively even shooting totals.

GW next visits Dayton on Sunday, October 11, at 1 p.m. Eastern, with coverage on ESPN+.
