Grunkemeyer throws for 314 yards as Virginia Tech beats Maryland, 35–26

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Ethan Grunkemeyer threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns as Virginia Tech beat Maryland 35–26 Saturday night at SECU Stadium, improving to 3–0.

Grunkemeyer completed 31 of 39 passes without an interception. Luke Reynolds caught 12 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, while Jeffrey Overton Jr. scored on a 49-yard reception and a second-half run.

The Hokies led 27–14 at halftime after Ja’Ricous Hairston caught a 2-yard touchdown pass. Overton’s rushing score helped extend the advantage to 35–14 before Maryland scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Malik Washington finished with 359 passing yards and three touchdowns for Maryland. Chris Durr Jr. caught 12 passes for 109 yards and two scores.

Virginia Tech held the ball for more than 36 minutes and ran out the clock to secure its first 3–0 start since 2017. The result ended Maryland’s 20-game nonconference winning streak.

The Hokies open ACC play at Boston College on Sept. 26 at noon ET.
