Georgetown brings surging attack to Villanova as BIG EAST run resumes

Georgetown returns to BIG EAST play Saturday with 10 goals from its last two matches and a different kind of test: sustaining that production against a Villanova team still searching for its first conference victory.
The No. 3 Hoyas visit Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pennsylvania, on October 24. Kickoff is 12:05 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+, according to Villanova's Friday preview. Both teams' schedules list noon; the host's more precise kickoff time is the one to use for this match. Georgetown enters 12-1-1 overall and 5-0 in the BIG EAST, while Villanova is 5-6-2 and 0-4-1. More than one route to goal
Monday's 6-1 win at Pitt gave Georgetown a substantial nonconference sendoff. Mitchell Baker scored twice, but the Hoyas also received goals from Mateo Ponce Ocampo, Jack Brown, Oliver Stafford and Charlie Rosenthal. Georgetown led 2-1 at halftime before scoring four times after the break, finishing with a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 15-2 edge in shots on target.
The goals came in different ways. Stafford converted Brown's corner, Baker followed a saved Matthew Van Horn attempt, and Rosenthal finished a late cross. That range matters against a defense trying to decide which runner or delivery to prioritize. Villanova cannot solve the matchup simply by assigning extra attention to one scorer. Georgetown's Pitt recap
Georgetown's previous outing was a 4-0 win over Seton Hall. The Hoyas built a three-goal halftime lead, outshot the Pirates 15-5 and needed only two saves from Charlie DeMarco to finish the shutout. Casey Milliken scored his first career goal in that match, with Rosenthal doing the same at Pitt three days later. The recent production has extended beyond the established finishing options. Villanova's available answers
Villanova lost 2-1 at Butler on October 16. Luke Martelli has contributed a point in three consecutive matches and leads the Wildcats with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Fynn Lahrsen also has four goals, although an injury limited him to 30 minutes against Butler.
The host's Friday report says center back Lorenzo Avalos has not played since a September 7 injury. Neither that report nor Lahrsen's recent restriction establishes a final Saturday availability decision. Villanova has conceded five goals in its last two games; Georgetown has allowed just two across its first five league matches. Villanova team update
What will decide it
The first question is whether Georgetown can turn pressure into an early lead rather than let the Wildcats settle. The second is how well the Hoyas protect against Martelli's involvement when their own numbers move forward. The third is Villanova's ability to clear the first delivery and the rebound, both of which featured in Georgetown's scoring at Pitt.
Last season's 3-3 draw is a reminder that this fixture has not always followed the teams' broader form. Georgetown has gone 16-0-2 against Villanova since the Wildcats' last series victory in 2007. Saturday's alumni-day crowd will see whether the Hoyas can extend that run without giving the hosts the open game they need. Series context
