Maryland–Georgetown moves downtown with the boards and bragging rights in play

Both teams opened with comfortable wins. Saturday’s meeting at Capital One Arena will test Maryland’s rebounding strength against Georgetown’s new backcourt and productive front line.
Georgetown left College Park with the win when its long-dormant rivalry with Maryland resumed last November. On Saturday, the Terrapins get their return trip to the District, and the Hoyas get a chance to make the first two games of the renewed series their own.
Maryland visits Georgetown at Capital One Arena on Saturday, Nov. 7, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Peacock. Both teams are 1–0 after season-opening wins Monday. Georgetown schedule, Maryland schedule
The early evidence points toward a physical test around the basket. Maryland overwhelmed Bucknell on the boards. Georgetown got a productive night inside from Vince Iwuchukwu and an immediate scoring lift from newcomer Jaland Lowe. One game offers only a starting point, but those performances give Saturday a few clear questions.
Can Maryland keep creating extra possessions?
The Terrapins scored 96 points against Bucknell without a particularly good night from three-point range. They made 7 of 28 attempts from deep, then built their advantage much closer to the rim: 28 offensive rebounds, 28 second-chance points and 54 points in the paint. The final rebounding margin was 54–22. Official box score
That gives Georgetown a concrete assignment. Getting Maryland to miss will mean little if the Hoyas cannot finish the possession with the rebound.
Andre Mills led the Terps with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the 96–67 victory. Pharrel Payne added 13 points and six boards, while freshman Kaden House scored 14 in his collegiate debut. Tomislav Buljan and DJ Wagner each contributed 10. Five double-figure scorers gave Maryland several ways to sustain its offense. Maryland’s opener recap
Buljan’s five offensive rebounds also make him worth watching alongside Payne. Georgetown’s ability to keep both away from second chances could determine how often Maryland gets to reset an otherwise stalled trip. Official box score
Georgetown has a new perimeter threat
Lowe made his Georgetown debut count, scoring 23 points and hitting 5 of 8 three-pointers in an 80–58 win over Loyola Maryland. Iwuchukwu supplied 21 points and nine rebounds, and Elmarko Jackson added 14. The three accounted for 58 of Georgetown’s 80 points. Georgetown’s opener recap
Lowe arrived from Kentucky and Jackson from Kansas as part of an eight-player group of newcomers. Saturday offers an early look at how that reshaped group handles a Big Ten opponent. Georgetown’s season-opening notes
The perimeter numbers deserve a closer look. Georgetown went 7 for 26 from three against Loyola, meaning everyone other than Lowe combined to go 2 for 18. Maryland’s defensive challenge is to limit his clean looks while still accounting for Iwuchukwu inside. For the Hoyas, a broader shooting contribution would make that choice harder. Georgetown also had a lapse to learn from. Loyola cut a large deficit to 11 in the second half before the Hoyas answered with 16 consecutive points. Against Maryland, preventing that kind of opening may matter as much as producing the response. Loyola’s game recap
A rivalry with another chapter guaranteed
Last year’s 70–60 Georgetown win was a difficult offensive night for Maryland, which shot 25 percent from the field. Payne still finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but the Terps could not erase the Hoyas’ second-half advantage. Maryland’s 2025 game recap
Saturday is the second game of a four-game agreement. Maryland is scheduled to host in 2027–28, followed by Georgetown in 2028–29. The Terps lead the all-time series 38–28; the schools first met in 1911, but had not played since November 2016 before renewing the matchup last season. Maryland’s series announcement
For now, both teams have one convincing win and plenty left to establish. Saturday should offer a sharper measure of Maryland’s interior strength and Georgetown’s rebuilt offense, with a local result that will follow both teams long after opening week.
