GW's Fordham finale turns on first contact and late-set execution

GW's Fordham finale turns on first contact and late-set execution

George Washington must turn a productive attack into a stronger finish when it faces Fordham again Saturday. The Revolutionaries forced a fifth set Friday but lost the Atlantic 10 series opener, leaving a short turnaround to repair their late-set execution.

GW hosts Fordham at 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington. The ESPN+ match concludes a two-match Atlantic 10 series and is the Revolutionaries' ALS Cause Match. Weekend information

Fordham won Friday’s opener 25-22, 28-30, 25-22, 15-25, 15-12. GW’s 25-15 fourth set showed its ability to take control, but the Rams recovered in the deciding frame. GW’s Friday match report

Nicanora Clarke and Cayla Cogan each finished Friday with 19 kills. Clarke hit .293 and Cogan .213, while Riley Samuel supplied six blocks and Abby Markworth had 14 digs. Those performances give GW options for the rematch: involve both attacking leaders, preserve the middle threat and make defensive touches lead to another controlled possession. Preserve the offense through the finish

GW led Dayton two sets to one on Oct. 16 before losing in five. Across the last two sets, the Revolutionaries produced 14 kills and 12 attacking errors on 48 attempts. That stretch explains why Saturday's watchpoint is not simply the total number of kills. GW needs swings that keep pressure on Fordham without surrendering points in clusters when a set tightens. Oct. 16 recap

Nicanora Clarke offers a starting point. She led GW with 15 kills in the five-set match and again with 11 in the following day's sweep. In that second defeat, GW hit .118 and Dayton recorded 10 aces. Cleaner first contacts would give setter Abby Markworth more choices rather than forcing the offense into predictable recovery swings. Oct. 17 recap and statistics

Riley Samuel's middle attack is another option to preserve. GW's pre-series report lists her at a .314 hitting percentage, while Markworth was averaging 8.96 assists per set. Those figures describe the season entering Friday, rather than a promise of how the short-turnaround rematch will unfold. GW's pre-series report

Make Fordham earn its points

Friday’s fourth set offers a more immediate defensive target than Fordham’s results before this trip. GW can compete with the Rams across a full match; the test is repeating that control when the score is tight and preventing a short run from deciding the finish. With both teams already familiar with the matchup, Saturday asks for execution rather than a fresh introduction.

First serve: Saturday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m. ET. Venue: Charles E. Smith Center, Washington, D.C. Watch: ESPN+.
