Hamilton and Mason face Saint Louis's blocking test in Saturday finale

Hamilton and Mason face Saint Louis's blocking test in Saturday finale

George Mason has an immediate chance to answer a five-set loss when the Patriots finish their Atlantic 10 series at Saint Louis on Saturday. After taking Friday’s opener to a 16-14 deciding set, Mason must find a way to finish the close moments and contain a Billikens attack led by Tamia Maddox.

First serve is 1:30 p.m. Eastern on Oct. 24 at Chaifetz Pavilion in St. Louis. The host's listed 12:30 p.m. start is Central time. ESPN+ will carry the match. Atlantic 10 schedule | Saint Louis match information

Saint Louis won Friday’s opener 18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 20-25, 16-14. Mason enters Saturday 13-9 overall and 5-5 in the Atlantic 10; the Billikens are 11-10 and 6-4 after their fourth consecutive win. Saint Louis’s report on Friday’s match

Maddox finished with a career-high 23 kills for Saint Louis. Mason’s first- and fourth-set wins show that the Patriots can interrupt the hosts’ rhythm, but Saturday requires sustaining that resistance into the final rallies. Their serve and first contact matter together: pressure that makes Saint Louis work for a clean attack is most useful when Mason can also build its own offense after winning the ball back. Hamilton against the block

Kiera Hamilton entered the weekend averaging 4.63 kills per set overall and 5.37 in Atlantic 10 play, according to Saint Louis's matchup report. Setter Ava Cheney was averaging 10.54 assists per set in league matches. Opposite them, the Billikens led the conference with 2.53 blocks per set. Official series preview

The matchup asks more of Mason than simply feeding Hamilton a high volume of attempts. Passes that preserve Cheney's setting choices could keep Saint Louis from loading its block toward the same attacker. When the Patriots are pushed off the net, avoiding errors against a set defense becomes especially important.

The Billikens' recent production shows why that distinction matters. In their Oct. 17 sweep at Fordham, Saint Louis recorded nine blocks and held the Rams to a .154 hitting percentage. Kayla Jansen supplied six blocks, including three solo stops. Mason will need an answer both for the points Saint Louis scores directly at the net and for the difficult swings its blocking presence can force. Saint Louis–Fordham recap

Do not overlook Saint Louis's attack

Tea Kalajdzic finished that Fordham match with 11 kills and no errors on 18 attempts. Jetta Brenning added five kills to her 25 assists. Those contributions illustrate the second challenge for Mason: keeping the Billikens from converting clean receptions into a varied attack. Oct. 17 match report

Autumn Martinez-Robinson is a player to watch in that phase. She entered the weekend with 30 aces and 3.84 digs per set. Her serving can help move Saint Louis away from its preferred offensive positions, while her back-row work matters when the Patriots have to defend longer rallies. Official series preview
