Navy wins Army–Navy Cup; Maryland drops ranked soccer matchup

Navy defeated Army 4–3 in the men’s Army–Navy Cup on October 9. Gavin McBride scored the winner at 84:02, with Wyatt Stevens and Duncan Sullivan assisting, according to Navy’s official box score. The Midshipmen improved to 3–5–4 overall and 1–3–1 in the Patriot League with their first conference victory of the season.

Earlier at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, Navy and Army’s women played to a 0–0 draw in their Star Match. Navy goalkeeper Natasha Stramrood made two saves as the Midshipmen moved to 10–4–2 overall and 3–1–1 in conference play. Navy next hosts Bucknell on Friday, October 16.

At Ludwig Field, No. 7 Maryland lost 2–1 to No. 19 Michigan State. Said El Eyssami brought the Terps level in the 35th minute, but Andrew Darakdjian scored the Spartans’ winner in the 67th. Laurin Mack made seven saves for Maryland, which fell to 7–3–1 overall and 2–3–1 in the Big Ten. The Terps visit Michigan on October 16.

Maryland volleyball led UCLA two sets to one before the Bruins won the final two for a 3–2 victory. UCLA won 23–25, 25–20, 21–25, 25–13, 15–12. Ava Brown led Maryland with 17 kills, Sydney Bryant and Brooklynne Brass had 15 apiece, and Sara Toth supplied 53 assists.

The Terps fell to 11–5 and 1–4 in the Big Ten. They return to the court Saturday, October 10, hosting Northwestern at 7 p.m. Eastern on B1G+.

James Madison lost 3–1 at Marshall, a day after beating the Thundering Herd in five sets. Marshall won the first two sets 25–18, dropped the third 25–15 and closed the match 25–12. Kennedy Louisell led JMU with 10 kills; Melisa Ilter and Ana Toumazatos each added nine. The Dukes are 10–6 overall and 5–1 in the Sun Belt.

Marquette swept Georgetown 25–13, 25–17, 25–13, leaving the Hoyas 10–6 and 2–3 in the Big East. Georgetown visits DePaul on Saturday.

No. 25 North Carolina also swept Virginia Tech, which fell to 4–10 overall and 1–4 in the ACC.
