D.C. United shut out 2-0 by FC Cincinnati at Audi Field despite edge in possession

D.C. United controlled the ball for most of Saturday night at Audi Field and had little to show for it, falling 2-0 to FC Cincinnati in front of 16,046.

Evander had a goal and an assist and Tom Barlow also scored for Cincinnati, which got one goal in each half. D.C. United never found a reply, and the loss dropped United to 7-12-12 on the season with 33 points through 31 matches.

Volume without a finish

The shot count favored the home side, 13-9, and United held 57.3 percent of possession while taking eight corners to Cincinnati's three. But only two of those 13 shots were on target, and Roman Celentano handled both for the visitors.

Brandon Servania led all players with five shots. Kye Rowles completed a game-high 61 passes as United finished 439 of 524 overall, and the hosts sent in 41 crosses, with just eight finding a teammate.

Cincinnati put three of its nine shots on goal and turned that into two goals. Sean Johnson was credited with one save. Kévin Denkey led the visitors with three shots.

Cincinnati's back line holds

Nick Hagglund was at the center of Cincinnati's effort to absorb pressure, leading the match with 16 defensive interventions while also completing 57 passes. Cincinnati as a team recorded 40 clearances and 21 interceptions, far outpacing United's 10 clearances and 16 interceptions as the visitors defended deep against a steady stream of D.C. crosses and set pieces.

Lucas Bartlett led United with 15 defensive interventions. United committed 12 fouls to Cincinnati's 10 and picked up one yellow card to the visitors' two. There were no red cards and neither side was awarded a penalty.

Where it leaves United

With 31 matches played, United sit 13th in the table at 33 points with a minus-17 goal difference, ahead of only Atlanta United (30 points) and CF Montréal (25). Cincinnati improved to 11-9-11 and 42 points, level with Orlando City in the standings.
