D.C. United seeks a sharper finish in quick Cincinnati rematch

D.C. United gets a quick chance to change the outcome against FC Cincinnati when the clubs meet again Saturday at Audi Field. Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat gave United an immediate reference point: enough pressure to compete, but not enough finished chances or defensive control to take points.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Eastern on October 24, with coverage on Apple TV. This is the second meeting in four days after the clubs’ earlier Cincinnati fixture was postponed from September 5 and played Wednesday. Official viewing information | Cincinnati’s match preview

Make the pressure count

United enters 7-11-12 with 33 points; Cincinnati is 10-11-9 with 39. On Wednesday, Kimito Nono equalized in the 38th minute from a João Peglow assist before Teenage Hadebe restored Cincinnati’s lead in the second half. D.C. had 51.4 percent possession and nine corners, compared with Cincinnati’s six. United’s match report and weekend outlook

Those numbers make the quality of United’s final action a practical watchpoint. Holding the ball and earning corners can put an opponent under strain, but D.C. needs the delivery, movement and next touch to produce a finish. The rematch offers little mystery about the opponent; the challenge is making familiar situations more productive.

Tai Baribo leads United with 16 league goals. Nono has scored three times in his last five matches, while Peglow leads the club with six assists. Keeping those routes to goal connected matters more than asking one player to solve the match alone. United’s current attacking production

Keep Cincinnati’s threats in view

Kévin Denkey has 17 MLS goals and Evander has 13 goals and 14 assists. Cincinnati’s threat therefore extends beyond the player taking the final shot. United must account for the pass that releases an attacker as well as the finish, particularly when its own forward pressure leaves space to defend. Opponent statistics

Cincinnati has won twice in 15 road games this season. That gives United an opportunity at home, but Wednesday’s result is a reminder that opportunity still has to be earned. A long attacking spell cannot come at the expense of being ready for the next Cincinnati possession.

A short turnaround, with decisions still to come

Alex Bono made four saves in his first start of the season Wednesday, and Lucas Bartlett recorded six clearances in his 100th MLS start. Those are verified contributions from the latest match, rather than a confirmed Saturday lineup. United’s latest team update

With so little time between meetings, the useful test is how each side adjusts without losing its structure. For D.C., cleaner attacking finishes and better protection when possession changes hands are the priorities to watch.
