Commanders' Daron Payne Suffers Significant Foot Injury, Likely Headed to IR

The Commanders' defensive line took a major hit Friday. Defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a significant foot injury in practice that will sideline him for the foreseeable future and will likely land him on injured reserve, Ian Rapoport reported, citing sources.
Shortly after that report, Rapoport reported that the Commanders had officially downgraded Payne to out for Sunday's game.
The timing is difficult for Washington. The Commanders sit at 1-4-1, third in the NFC East, and host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, at 8:20 p.m. ET. They will take the field for that divisional matchup without Payne in the middle of their defensive front.
Rapoport's report did not include a specific timetable for Payne's return beyond describing his absence as lasting for the foreseeable future, and the Commanders have not been reported to have made a final decision on injured reserve.
For now, the certainty is that Payne will not play against the Eagles, and the Commanders will need to sort out their defensive tackle rotation ahead of Sunday night's game.
