Chadwell returns to Conway as Liberty visits Coastal Carolina

Jamey Chadwell’s return to Conway gives Liberty’s Thursday trip to Coastal Carolina an extra layer. The Flames arrive with a two-game winning streak and a chance to carry last week’s offensive surge into a road matchup with their coach’s former program.

Liberty (2–1) followed a 24–23 win over Gardner-Webb with a 51–15 victory over Ball State. The Flames piled up a season-high 460 yards against the Cardinals, and quarterback Deshawn Purdie threw three touchdown passes, according to Liberty’s game recap.

Coastal Carolina (1–2) is coming off a 22–14 loss at Delaware. The Chanticleers moved the ball for 385 yards, with quarterback Deuce Bailey throwing for 250 yards and two touchdowns, but four fumbles—including two lost—undercut the offense, according to the official box score.

Chadwell coached Coastal for five seasons before taking over at Liberty in 2023. He returns to Brooks Stadium with the Flames for the first time as an opposing head coach, bringing a Liberty team whose offense has grown more productive over the past two weeks. Liberty’s weekly press conference previewed the matchup.

The schools last met in the 2020 Cure Bowl, when Liberty won 37–34 in overtime. The Flames hold an 8–7 edge in the series, according to Liberty’s game center.

Liberty and Coastal kick off Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina. The game will air on ESPN, and Coastal has designated it a Teal Out, according to Coastal’s schedule announcement.
