Tuch and Kyrou score twice each as Capitals beat Flyers 5-2

Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou each scored two goals, Dylan Strome handed out three assists and the Washington Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Wednesday night at Capital One Arena.

Washington led 1-0 after the first period, 3-1 after the second and added two more in the third in front of a crowd of 17,391. The Capitals improved to 7-4-0 and 6-2-0 at home, while the Flyers fell to 3-8-4 and 1-5-1 on the road.

Balanced scoring up front

Tuch's two goals gave him nine on the season, tops on the team. He finished with five shots on goal, a takeaway and a plus-3 rating in 18:41 of ice time, which included 3:46 on the penalty kill. Kyrou's pair brought his season total to four, and Aliaksei Protas added the other goal, his first of the year.

Strome set up three of the five goals, and Pierre-Luc Dubois and defenseman Jack St. Ivany each had two assists. Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy also picked up helpers. The Capitals went 1-for-3 on the power play.

Logan Thompson stopped 23 of 25 shots for Washington. At the other end, Joseph Woll made 25 saves on 29 shots in 58:09 of work.

Defense did its part

Washington outshot Philadelphia 30-25 and blocked 25 shots to the Flyers' 14. Timothy Liljegren led the way with four blocks, and Chychrun, Martin Fehervary and Ryan Leonard each had three. The Capitals also outhit the Flyers 32-23, with Roy delivering nine on his own.

Philadelphia committed 19 giveaways to Washington's 11. The Flyers did win the faceoff battle, taking 57.7 percent of draws behind Sean Couturier (12-2) and Christian Dvorak (13-4), but it did not translate into enough offense.

Couturier and Matvei Michkov scored for Philadelphia, which went 1-for-4 with the man advantage. Denver Barkey, Trevor Zegras and Nick Seeler had the assists. Michkov's goal was his ninth of the season.

Rookie left wing Ilya Protas skated 11:26 for Washington with two blocked shots and 1:32 of power-play time.

Where things stand

The win leaves the Capitals fourth in the Metropolitan Division with 14 points, behind Carolina (22), New Jersey (16) and the Rangers (15) and even with the Islanders on points. Philadelphia sits last in the division with 10 points.

Washington has no time to rest. The Capitals head to Nashville to face the Predators on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. ET.
