Capitals fall 3–1 to Lightning after two-goal first period

Washington could not erase Tampa Bay's early lead in a 3–1 NHL loss Saturday, October 3, at Benchmark International Arena.

Charle-Edouard D'Astous scored at 2:26 of the first period, and Conor Geekie added a goal at 16:30. Brandon Hagel assisted on both Tampa Bay goals.

Justin Sourdif cut Washington's deficit in the second period by redirecting a Jakob Chychrun shot. The Capitals remained within one until Jake Guentzel scored into an empty net with 2:05 left in regulation.

John Carlson blocked an Alex Ovechkin attempt during Washington's late pressure and helped start the play that led to Guentzel's goal. The loss came one night after Washington's season-opening win at Carolina.
