Alonso's Fifth-Inning Homer Lifts Orioles Past Blue Jays, 4-2

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Game 1 of a doubleheader that served as a makeup from Sept. 22. A crowd of 10,562 was on hand.

Pete Alonso went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. His homer came in the fifth inning off Max Scherzer with a runner on and one out, extending Baltimore's lead from 2-0 to 4-0. Baltimore's first two runs had scored in the second inning, with Jeremiah Jackson driving in one of them.

Chris Bassitt started and worked into the sixth inning, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Per the box score, Bassitt faced two batters in the sixth before departing, and the two runs charged to him scored after he left the game. Luis De León, Anthony Nunez and Rico Garcia combined to cover the sixth through eighth innings without allowing a run, and Andrew Kittredge worked a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one, to record the save and secure the win for Bassitt.

Max Scherzer took the loss for Toronto, allowing four runs on four hits over five innings, including Alonso's home run, while walking three and striking out seven. Jose Rodriguez followed with a scoreless inning, and Brendon Little and Paul Sewald combined for two more scoreless innings.

Toronto out-hit Baltimore 10-5 in the game. Andres Gimenez, Brandon Valenzuela and Ernie Clement each had two hits for the Blue Jays. Gimenez doubled twice, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Clement each added a double. Toronto finished 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, according to the box score.

Baltimore finished with five hits as a team, with Alonso's home run standing as its only extra-base hit. Jeremiah Jackson was charged with a throwing error for Baltimore, and Scherzer was charged with a fielding error for Toronto.
