Bartlett’s equalizer isn’t enough as D.C. United falls to Charlotte

Bartlett’s equalizer isn’t enough as D.C. United falls to Charlotte

Charlotte wins 2–1 at Audi Field behind Allan Saint-Maximin’s second-half goal and 10 saves from Kristijan Kahlina.

D.C. United found its way back into Saturday’s match almost as soon as the second half began. Lucas Bartlett met Keisuke Kurokawa’s free kick with a header, erasing Charlotte FC’s lead and giving the home side most of a half to chase a win.

United finished the night with nothing to show for that recovery. Allan Saint-Maximin scored in the 71st minute, and Charlotte held on for a 2–1 victory at Audi Field despite a busy evening for goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina.

Kahlina made 10 saves. United put 11 shots on target, but Bartlett’s 47th-minute finish was the only one that counted. The loss left D.C. on 29 points with six wins, eight losses and 11 draws.

An early setback, then a quick response

Ashley Westwood put Charlotte ahead in the 22nd minute. A ball into the penalty area came back out to the midfielder, who struck from outside the box and beat Sean Johnson.

United had opportunities to answer before halftime. Kahlina denied Louis Munteanu with a kick save, helping Charlotte reach the break with its one-goal advantage intact. At the other end, Johnson stopped Liel Abada to keep D.C. within reach.

The equalizer came from a set piece shortly after the restart. A foul by David Schnegg gave Kurokawa a delivery into the box, and Bartlett finished with his head. United’s captain had brought the match level at 1–1.

Charlotte finds the finish

The match remained tied until Saint-Maximin took a pass from Westwood on the left side of the penalty area and scored from a tight angle. It was his first goal for Charlotte and the difference on a night when United repeatedly tested Kahlina.

D.C. kept searching for another response. Munteanu finished with nine shots, according to United’s post-match report, while Kurokawa and Munteanu each created three chances. That production brought pressure, but it did not produce a second goal.

A late Munteanu effort was ruled out, leaving United without an equalizer.

Charlotte’s unbeaten run reached eight matches. United, meanwhile, was left with a familiar opponent taking the points: Charlotte had also won the clubs’ August meeting, 3–1.

Where United stands and what comes next

United’s post-match report placed the club 12th in the Eastern Conference with 29 points from 25 matches: six wins, eight losses and 11 draws. With nine league games remaining, D.C. is still chasing a playoff place, and Saturday’s defeat used up another chance to gain ground at home.

The next two MLS matches are on the road. United visits the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place on Saturday, September 26, with kickoff at 10:30 p.m. ET, then faces Inter Miami on Saturday, October 10, at 7:30 p.m. ET.

D.C. returns to Audi Field on Wednesday, October 14, to host Red Bull New York at 7:30 p.m. ET. Before that home date, United will need to turn its attacking chances into points away from Washington.
