Commanders turn to Mariota while Daniels’ return timetable remains unsettled

Washington has an interim quarterback plan. It does not yet have a public timetable for Jayden Daniels’ return.
Marcus Mariota will lead the offense while Daniels undergoes further evaluation after dislocating his left elbow in Sunday’s 37-20 loss to Dallas. In its Tuesday update, the team said Daniels was scheduled to see specialists Tuesday and Wednesday before decisions about his short-term future.
That distinction matters heading into the home opener. Mariota is the immediate answer at quarterback; the length of his assignment remains unresolved. Washington hosts Seattle on September 27 at 1 p.m. Eastern at Northwest Stadium.
What Washington has confirmed
The Commanders reported that Daniels had no fractures in the elbow. That finding did not come with a return date. Head coach Dan Quinn said Monday that Daniels had undergone imaging and that the team wanted more information from specialists before settling on next steps.
As of that Monday press conference, Quinn and general manager Adam Peters had not discussed adding a veteran quarterback. The club’s Tuesday report reiterated that Washington was still gathering information rather than announcing a recovery schedule.
Mariota finished the Cowboys game after Daniels was injured just before halftime. The change now puts the veteran at the center of preparation for Seattle, with Washington seeking its first win after an 0-2 start.
The injury list extends beyond quarterback
Quinn’s Monday update also left several other situations to monitor. Safety Nick Cross was discharged from a Texas hospital Monday morning after an internal injury, but Quinn did not provide an update on his availability for Sunday.
Brandon Coleman was on track to practice despite a finger injury. Javon Kinlaw was expected to be limited by a shoulder injury, and Sam Cosmi was in the concussion protocol. Those were Monday’s updates, not final game-status decisions for Seattle.
Washington released an unofficial Week 3 depth chart Tuesday. It should be read alongside the coming practice reports, rather than as a substitute for medical or game-status updates.
More than a quarterback change
Washington’s work this week also includes a defense that allowed Prescott to throw four touchdown passes with only five incompletions. Quinn said Monday that communication in the secondary needed improvement against CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.
The immediate tasks are clear: prepare Mariota to run the offense, track the information on Daniels and the other injured players, and correct the defensive issues before Seattle arrives. A return date for Daniels should come from the team’s medical evaluation, not from the urgency of an 0-2 start.
