American’s final corner kick became West Virginia’s last chance to win Monday. With only 20 seconds remaining after the clearance, Brayden Macomber found Pablo Pozos on the counterattack. Evan Tubbs came off his line, disrupted Pozos and gave Javi Gonzalez time to clear before the whistle, preserving a 0–0 draw at Reeves Field.
The finish capped Tubbs’ four-save performance against the Mountaineers, designated No. 15 for the match. American moved to 2–6–4 overall, while West Virginia is 5–2–4. The official box score shows how much defensive work the Eagles needed: WVU outshot American 16–3, put four attempts on target to AU’s one and held a 9–1 advantage in corners.
Tubbs had already stopped Thomas Bowe’s late opportunity in the 88th minute. Earlier, he handled Jacob Redenfors’ header through traffic from a 19th-minute corner and denied Isaac Scheer after the forward got behind the defense in the second half. Juan Alvarez also struck the post for West Virginia before halftime.
American’s best second-half opening came through Yuta Phoenix, whose run up the left produced a low shot that Kendall Starks saved. The Eagles finished without a goal, but kept the visitors’ greater volume of chances from producing one either.
The result followed a 2–0 loss at Lehigh, American’s first Patriot League defeat of the season. Its previous home match had been a 2–0 win over Bucknell on Oct. 3, when Tubbs made five saves. Monday completed AU’s nonconference schedule and supplied another home clean sheet before the Eagles return to league play.
The closing sequence captured both sides of American’s afternoon: limited attacking opportunities, and a goalkeeper supported by a final defensive clearance when West Virginia broke forward in the closing seconds. West Virginia’s last counter went unfinished; American left with the draw.
