American's late-game surge meets Lafayette on Senior Day

American's late-game surge meets Lafayette on Senior Day

American has found a productive way to close tight matches. Saturday's challenge is to turn that late-game success into another Patriot League win against the team that ended the Eagles' conference-tournament run last season.

Lafayette visits Reeves Field in Washington on October 24 for a 1 p.m. Eastern kickoff on ESPN+. American is 4-6-4 overall and 4-1-1 in league play, good for third place entering the weekend. Lafayette arrives 3-8-3 and 2-2-2. The Eagles will recognize seniors Juan Carlos Alvarez, Owen Edsell, Reyes Parra and Ian Webb-Johnson before the match. American's match preview

Patience has paid off

American's last two road trips produced six points without a goal conceded. Chris Sullivan's 89th-minute winner beat Boston University 1-0 on Sunday. Wednesday at Army, Nicholas Beil broke the deadlock at 79:47 and Parra added the second goal at 88:20.

The Army performance was more than a late escape. American held a 15-9 shooting advantage and a 7-3 edge in corners, although it had to wait until the closing stages to convert. Oliver Snowdon supplied Beil's opener; Moad Ezzahir assisted Parra's finish from outside the penalty area. Beil's goal was his first since returning September 19 after an injury sidelined him for the opening seven matches. Army recap

Evan Tubbs needed two saves at Army for his seventh clean sheet of the season. That defensive foundation has kept American in contention despite an attack that has scored only eight goals. Lafayette has nine, making this a meeting of the Patriot League's two lowest-scoring offenses. American team notes

Lafayette's late vulnerability

The Leopards were level with Drexel until the 84th minute Tuesday, then conceded twice in 40 seconds and lost 3-1. Oliver Gordon had equalized in the first half, heading in Ryder Atwood's cross for his first goal of the season. Harrison Wolfrom saved a second-half penalty before Drexel finally broke the tie.

That sequence makes the final quarter-hour particularly relevant Saturday. American has recently found decisive goals there; Lafayette's latest match slipped away in the same portion of the game. The Leopards also used two goalkeepers against Drexel, with Marco Brok playing the first half and Wolfrom the second. That is evidence of Tuesday's rotation, not confirmation of Saturday's starter. Lafayette's preceding loss, 4-1 to Navy, also came with a statistical warning against judging control by volume alone. The Leopards led 18-7 in shots and 12-2 in corners but conceded three times after halftime. American will need to make its best chances count rather than assume territorial pressure guarantees a result. Navy recap

The home stretch

American's most useful next step would be an earlier breakthrough, reducing the need for another late winner. Maintaining defensive shape while chasing that goal remains just as important in a matchup with little scoring margin.

Lafayette won both meetings last season, including the Patriot League semifinal at Reeves Field. The Eagles lead the all-time series 17-6-8, but Saturday offers a more immediate measure: whether their recent road form can carry over at home with three regular-season matches remaining.
