Two early goals leave American chasing Colgate in 2–0 loss

American’s women’s soccer team spent most of Saturday’s match trying to recover from a deficit built in the opening seven minutes. Colgate scored twice early and preserved the advantage for a 2–0 win.

Regan Taylor opened the scoring at 4:11 from an Ava McCloskey assist. Just over two minutes later, Taylor supplied the assist for Jade Vieira’s goal at 6:15. The sequence gave Colgate a cushion before American could settle into a scoreless contest.

American goalkeeper Riley Molbury prevented the deficit from growing when she saved Colgate’s Josie Tunney penalty at 24:32. Molbury finished with four saves. The stop kept American within two goals, but the Eagles could not convert their own chances against Colgate goalkeeper Ella Poppinga.

Colgate led total shots 15–8 and shots on goal 6–4. Lauren Sanders took three of American’s eight shots, leading the Eagles in attempts. American generated enough on-target chances to require saves, but none became the goal needed to begin a comeback.

Taylor’s involvement in both early goals gave Colgate the lead it protected for the rest of the match. Molbury’s penalty save prevented a third goal, while Poppinga kept American off the scoreboard.
